Nike’s network of collaborators now extends well beyond the conventional realms of sneaker boutiques and streetwear brands. Consequently, it’s not entirely surprising to witness Nike partnering with a movie star inspired by a major motion picture. In this unexpected collaboration, actor Timothée Chalamet found himself at the Nike campus, contributing to the design of an extremely limited edition of Dunk Lows inspired by his upcoming lead role in “Wonka.” Even the 27-year-old actor was taken aback by the opportunity.
“I definitely never thought I would get to say that I designed a Nike shoe, let alone a Dunk,” Chalamet shared in an exclusive interview with Complex.
To promote the film’s release on December 15, five pairs of the Wonka Dunks will be part of a special giveaway. Fans can enter by submitting videos showcasing their Wonka-inspired creations, and five winners will receive these highly coveted, limited-edition Dunk Lows. Talk about a golden ticket.
The design of the pair draws inspiration from Wonka’s wardrobe in the film, featuring an upper that mimics the colorful pattern seen on the inner lining of his jacket and a burgundy velvet tongue to match the coat’s external appearance. Chalamet even brought the actual jacket he wears in the movie to the Nike campus in Beaverton, Oregon, for the design team to reference. The heel tab showcases the cloud candy featured in the new movie, while the tongue incorporates a brown leather tab adorned with the recognizable Wonka “W.”
“It’s unlike any pair of Dunks I’ve ever seen,” says Chalamet. “I just didn’t know how it would come out, and they totally nailed it.”
Chalamet reveals that he drew inspiration from classic Dunks like the “What The Dunk” and the unconventional layered Swooshes on Sacai’s Nike collaboration when creating this chocolatier-inspired design. The distressed detailing throughout pays homage to the wardrobe of the young Wonka portrayed by Chalamet in the movie.
This release marks the second Willy Wonka-themed Nike sneaker, with the first having been the 2005 Nike SB “Oompa Loompa” SB Dunk Low, mimicking the appearance of Wonka’s diminutive minions. Chalamet mentions that obtaining a pair of his own has been “almost impossible” thus far.
In an exclusive interview, we had the chance to sit down with Chalamet to discuss this unique sneaker project, his personal history with sneakers, and how he channeled the Wonkas of years past to prepare for his leading role.
